Ruby is a red variety of mineral corundum. It is coloured by trace amounts of chromium. Named from latin word “ruber” meaning “red”. Its colour was traditionally associated with things like blood, fire and love. No wonder then, that Ruby was favoured by many royal families and thus priced beyond the reach of the most. Rubies first arrived to Europe from such exotic places as India and Far East, which just added to the rarity and price.
Rubies are mainly valued for their colour with clarity on the second place as most stones are included. Clean stones are rare, as are those above the weight of 2ct. Nowadays most rubies are mined in Tanzania, Mozambique, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Madagascar.
